What is a CAN bus?

CAN bus (Controller Area Network) is a digital communication network within a vehicle. It replaces separate wiring harnesses with a shared communication line, allowing different control units (such as the lighting control unit and headlights) to communicate with each other.

How do I know if my car has a CAN bus system?

If your car has CAN bus-controlled headlights (often LED, Xenon or matrix headlights), the original high beam wiring usually does not provide a conventional 12 V trigger signal for a standard relay.

If no trigger signal is available, it can be obtained from the CAN bus using a separate CAN bus interface, such as the XBB Dongle or CANM8.

What is a CAN bus interface used for?

A CAN bus interface is an intelligent switching device that allows auxiliary driving lights to be installed on vehicles equipped with a CAN bus system.

The CAN bus interface reads the high beam control signal from the vehicle's CAN bus and converts it into a 12 V trigger signal, allowing the auxiliary driving lights to operate together with the vehicle's original high beams.

The operating principle depends on the system used. For example, CANM8 provides a 12 V trigger signal to a separate relay wiring harness, while the XBB Dongle & PowerUnit system allows auxiliary driving lights to be connected directly to the PowerUnit in certain cases, without a separate relay.

Can I install auxiliary driving lights using a CAN bus interface?

Absolutely, provided that your vehicle has a compatible CAN bus system. A CAN bus interface is often the only practical way to connect auxiliary driving lights.

However, not all CAN bus interfaces are compatible with every vehicle model, so it is important to verify compatibility before installation.

If your vehicle's model and model year are listed on either list, the corresponding decoder can generally be used when installing auxiliary lights. Compatibility may still depend on factors such as the vehicle’s equipment level.
