Info about ATEX

What is ATEX?

The ATEX directive is a European Union regulation that applies to equipment and operations in explosive environments, where flammable substances are handled.

You may encounter ATEX compliance in industries such as:

  • Oil refineries, natural gas facilities, and paint manufacturing
  • Chemical industry
  • Mining
  • Chemical laboratories
  • Gas stations
  • Petrochemical plants
  • Restaurants handling flammable gases or liquids
  • Other high-risk environments (e.g., grain mills, sawmills, etc.)

Under EU Directive 94/9/EC, areas classified as explosion-risk zones must use ATEX-certified equipment. The directive defines which electrical equipment can be used safely, which hazardous gases are present, temperature conditions required for safe operation.

Understanding ATEX Classification

It is not enough for a device to be ATEX-certified—it must also match the required ATEX specifications for the environment in which it will be used. These include:

  • ATEX Zone Classification
  • ATEX Equipment Group
  • ATEX Temperature Class
  • ATEX Atmospheric Composition Group

1. ATEX Zone Classifications (Hazard Levels)

  • 0 Very high explosion risk (gases present continuously or for long periods)
  • 1 High explosion risk (gases present occasionally during normal operation)
  • 2 Moderate explosion risk (gases present only briefly during normal operation)
  • 20 Very high explosion risk (flammable dust continuously present)
  • 21 High explosion risk (flammable dust present occasionally)
  • 22 Moderate explosion risk (flammable dust present only briefly)

ATEX Equipment Category Requirement

  • Zone 0 or 20 → Use Category 1 equipment
  • Zone 1 or 21 → Use Category 2 equipment
  • Zone 2 or 22 → Use Category 3 equipment

2. ATEX Equipment Groups

  • Group I Equipment for mining environments
  • Group II Equipment for industrial environments (non-mining)
  • If a device is suitable for both mining and industrial use, it will have separate Group I and Group II codes: "I 2 G..." → Mining applications, "II 2 G..." → Industrial applications

For mining environments, equipment is further categorized into:

M1 → Can be continuously used in explosive atmospheres (e.g., methane gas in mines).
M2 → Must be switched off when explosive gases are present.

3. ATEX Temperature Classifications

ATEX temperature ratings indicate the maximum temperature the device's surface can reach.

  • T1 = 450°C
    T2 = 300°C
    T3 = 200°C
    T4 = 135°C
    T5 = 100°C
    T6 = 85°C
    The lower the temperature rating (e.g., T6), the safer the device is in volatile environments.

4. ATEX Atmospheric Composition Groups

  • G Gas, vapor, or mist
  • D Dust
  • For gas environments (G), additional classifications define which gases the device is safe for:
    • I Methane and similar gases
    • IIA Propane and similar gases
    • IIB Ethylene and similar gases
    • IIC Hydrogen and the most hazardous gases

When Do I Need an ATEX Flashlight?

If you work in areas where flammable gases, vapors, or dusts are present, you must use an ATEX-certified flashlight to ensure safety and compliance.

How Is ATEX Certification Tested?

To receive ATEX approval, a flashlight must pass rigorous testing to confirm it does not pose an ignition risk in hazardous environments.

Tests include:

  • Spark prevention testing
  • Impact resistance testing (ensures the device can withstand harsh conditions)
  • Drop testing (ensures the flashlight remains safe after a fall)
  • International Protection (IP) rating requirements (Minimum: IP54 to prevent solid or liquid ingress)
  • Design validation to maximize safety and durability

How Do I Know If My Flashlight Is ATEX-Certified?

Each ATEX flashlight must have a clear protection rating marked on its body. This code tells the user in which environments the flashlight can be safely used.

Example ATEX Code:

II 1 G EEx IIC T6 Tamb - 40 º C to + 60 º C

Breaking Down the Code:

  • II → Industrial use (not for mining)
  • 1 → ATEX Category 1 (suitable for Zones 0 and 20)
  • G → Gas environments (can be used in areas with gases, vapors, or mists
  • EEx → Explosion-proof certification according to European standards
  • IIC → Gas group (suitable for highly flammable gases like hydrogen and acetylene)
  • T6 → Max surface temperature: 85°C (very safe for volatile environments)
  • Tamb -40ºC to +60ºC → Operating temperature range

Other Important ATEX Markings

CE Marking → Confirms compliance with European safety standards
Ex Symbol (inside a hexagon) → Indicates ATEX explosion-proof certification
